The Asia-Pacific preliminaries of NTD's vocal competition in Taipei, Taiwan, wrapped up last week (August 28th). 18 vocalists of Chinese descent from various countries including, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia and Macao qualified for the semi-finals in New York in late October.
The competition took place at Soochow University Performing Arts Center on Sunday.
Forty-three vocalists took to the stage at , singing bel canto-style.
Judge Guan Guiming, a renowned tenor, comments on just what they were looking for in the artists.
[Guan Guiming, Judge]:
"Did they really perform the song completely? Another point, did they add their interpretation, their understanding of the work? That is a comprehensive grading."
On October 29, these 18 semi-finalists will join their North American counterparts at Ida K. Lang Recital Hall at Hunter College in New York. If successful they will then move on to the finals of NTD's vocal competition at Carnegie Hall's Isaac Stern Auditorium on Sunday, October 30.
