The Chinese regime appears to be on its way to achieving modern military status by 2020, according a report the Pentagon released on Wednesday.
The U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Michael Schiffer also said "China's ability to sustain military power at a distance today remains limited."
The report points out security concerns and the Chinese regime's increasing military power over Taiwan. It also cites last year's cyber attacks—including on the U.S. government computer network—that appeared to originate from China.
Reuters reports some China observers—including U.S. Congress members—are concerned about the Chinese regime's growing military expenses coinciding with Washington's plans for defense cuts.
Chinese state-run news media on Thursday dismissed the Pentagon report, calling it an alarmist "cock-and-bull story."
