French president Nicolas Sarkozy was in Beijing for a brief meeting with Chinese leaders. Sarkozy chairs the G20 nations... and says they need to do more to stimulate global economic growth.

In Beijing Thursday, French president Nicolas Sarkozy said G20 nations must play a role in stimulating global economic growth.

Sarkozy, who chairs the G20 nations this year, said China's backing is essential for France's G20 goals.

[Nicolas Sarkozy, French President]:
"It is very clear as president of the G20 that I can't imagine not coming to China to speak with my Chinese friends on the great economic questions that worry the world."

He said the member countries must play a role in stimulating global economic growth.

[Nicolas Sarkozy, French President]:
"The G20 summit must be conclusive, must be decisive, and must play its part in the revival of global growth."

France's G20 goals include a roadmap for tackling economic imbalances and measures to reduce market speculation and commodity price volatility.

French Finance Minister Francois Baroin, traveling with Sarkozy, is due to remain in China on Friday to discuss the G20 agenda.

Sarkozy's brief stopover comes amid growing signs of concern in Beijing over the euro zone debt crisis.

Sarkozy's next stop is France's Pacific territory of New Caledonia.
