How to Do a Basic Knit Stitch - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. My name is Flossie and I am with The Yarn Company in New York City and I am going to show you how to do the basic knit stitch. The knit stitch is the first stitch that, as a knitter, you would learn how to do. It is the most basic stitch. If you just keep doing it, knit on both sides, you create garter stitch and it is really the simplest, most basic stitch you can learn. So, what we do is, we are holding the yarn and the work in our left hand. And with our right hand needle, we are going to insert the needle from the front of the stitch towards the back, grab our working yarn which, is the long end of the yarn attached to the ball, wrap it around the back end of that needle, wedge it between the two needles and then we are going to pull that back needle down through the loop and let that original stitch come off the needle. So again, we are going through the front of the needle, towards the back, take the working yarn and wrap it around the needle, wedge it between the two, and we are going to pull that back needle back down through the loop and let the original stitch come off the needle.
