Indonesia's Independence Day marked the country's hard won independence 66 years ago. The first person to raise Indonesia's flag on that day has been awarded a special gift of appreciation. He recalls the moment of first raising the flag with emotion. He was just 18 years old, our correspondent has the story.

Indonesia's 66th Independence Day is marked with a touching ceremony. Ilyas is Indonesia's very first flag raiser- he raised the flag of Indonesia in 1945 and is now the only living witness. It was at the house of Indonesia's first president, Sukarno.

At the ceremony in Kalibata city, Vice-Governor of Prijanto in Jakarta hands a miniature of apartment blocks to Ilyas Karim.

The gift comes from the Kalibata city apartment developer, Pradani Sukses Ababi Ltd.

    [Budi Yanto Lusli, Kalibata City]:
"There are so many things that we can do to enjoy this independence. In this country, let's give more attention to the people who are less fortunate. We have that opportunity today. We have a hero named Ilyas Karim, so we do a contribution like this. "

Ilyas was able to reconstruct the scene when he first raised the flag. It's an emotional time recalling his memories fighting for Indonesia's independence.
