U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is in China today and met with China's parliamentary chief Wu Bangguo. Mr. Biden is calling for closer cooperation between Washington and Beijing in the interest of the global economy.

On Thursday, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden called for closer economic ties with China, in the interest of benefiting the global economy.

The statements were made during a meeting with China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, ranked number two in the Chinese Communist Party hierarchy.

Washington hopes that Biden's visit to Beijing will build trust between the leaders of the world's two largest economies.

    [Joe Biden, U.S. Vice President]:
"I hope this doesn't sound chauvinistic to other countries, but our mutual success will benefit the whole world."

Biden also said that the global economic health rested on greater cooperation between the two countries.

    [Joe Biden, U.S. Vice President]:
"As the two largest economies in the world, at the moment when the world economic circumstance is uneasy, I think we hold the key together not only to our own prosperity, but to generate growth and jobs worldwide."

But festering tensions over debt, deficits and currency are overshadowing Biden's visit and comments in the official Chinese media have indicated that he may face tough questions in his meetings.

Biden's five-day visit is a chance for China to test the U.S. administration's intentions on their country's debt and possible fresh arms sales to Taiwan.
