Car trunks, back seats, and roof racks seem like easy storage spaces for extra items. But, as Monique O'Grady of the Alliance to Save Energy notes, excessive clutter can decrease your car's gas mileage and cost you money at the pump.

For every 100 pounds of stuff an individual or family stores in their vehicle, gas mileage is reduced by up to two percent, or, as O'Grady says, $35 a year in extra fuel costs at today’s gas prices. Similarly, a loaded roof rack can cost a family $90 a year from a five percent decrease in fuel efficiency.
