    Syrian Tanks on the Prowl for Protesters

    Syria's government crackdown against pro-democracy activists continues in the east of the country. Various social media websites have posted videos of the violence, including tanks deployed against protesters.

    The Syrian army has launched an offensive in Deir al-Zor. A video posted on the internet on Tuesday showed tanks driving in the streets.

    Another social media website showed a tank on the Baath Bridge in the area of Al Houeika in central Deir al-Zor. It was filmed on Tuesday.

    Night time views of protesters allegedly gathered in Deir al-Zor appeared on another social media website. The video was posted on August 8.

    The protesters chanted slogans calling for the resignation of Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

    A funeral procession, said to be filmed in Daraa appeared on You Tube, was posted on August 8. It showed the coffin of a Daraa resident being carried out on the street as mourners held slogans.

    Deir al-Zor is the capital of an oil-producing province bordering Iraq's Sunni heartland.
