Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a written statement that China is deeply concerned with the widespread famine triggered by the severe drought in the Horn of Africa region. The drought and the massive displacement of people in the region, in addition to high food prices and dwindling resources, have created a severe humanitarian crisis. More than 11 million people have been affected. Ma also refuted accusations from some western officials that the drought was caused by China's land acquisition activities in Africa, saying such claims "are purely fictitious and have ulterior motives".
