(0724 CR M06)WHITE DOLPHINS RESCUE BASE DATELINE: July 24, 2011 LENGTH: 00:00:56 VO The first rescue and breeding base for endangered Chinese white dolphins has started trial operation. The Chinese white dolphins mainly live in seas around Xiamen city in southeastern Fujian Province and the Pearl River estuary in south China. The dolphins are under first-class state protection. The Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences estimates that about 2,000 of them are living in China's seas. A rescue and breeding base, the first of its kind in the country, has been built in Xiamen, which can accommodate up to four to six white dolphins. It started trial operation on Saturday. The base boasts a hospital for injured or stranded dolphins. Since dolphins are known as wonderful psychological "doctors", the center will also be used as a rehabilitation center for children with infantile autism and brain paralysis.
