Dutch student organizations are about to sue the government. They are against a law about extra fees for slow students. Our Holland correspondent brings us more.

Dutch student organizations decided to start a trial against the government after the upper house of Parliament last week voted narrowly in favor of a government plan for charging slow students extra.

The law applies for high schools and universities. The students will be paying 3,000 euro in case they take longer than one extra year for completing their studies.

The three student organizations - ISO, LKvV and LSVB - consider that the law has weak parts, one of which is that it affects students who already have a delay.

[Pascal ten Have, Chairman of LSVB]:
"It is strange that the law applies also for people who study and have a delay. The law came suddenly and they could not consider that."

Another group consists of part-time students.

[Pascal ten Have, Chairman of LSVB]:
"They do two times longer. So if you have a study of 4 years, they will need 8 years to study. But now they have to pay 3,000 euros for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th college year, because they would have a delay. And they just follow the study program."

Some people are in favor of the law.

[Sietsko Thijs]:
"I think a restriction on everlasting or long-term studying is good. However it needs to be refined. I think the students are quite spoiled. A large part of their studies are state-funded. That's also investing in themselves and there are restrictions..."

[A. Bos]:
"I think they need to raise their voice. But we all need something. These last several years, everything has gotten so easy. It can't be that way any longer. We also need to think of the elderly, the group who have less, families with children."

Others support the students.
