Chinese leader Hu Jintao has formally recognized the new nation of South Sudan. It became independent this past Saturday. South Sudan is where the majority of crude oil is located... compared to the country of Sudan to the north... and China is a major consumer.

The Chinese regime has been eager to ensure a peaceful transition of Sudan into two separate states to avoid disruption of its oil supplies.

China has close on-going relations with Sudan. But with three-quarters of the oil reserves situated in South Sudan, Hu is openly courting and seeking friendly ties with South Sudan.
