(1229 CR M13)ELEPHANT ATTACK COMPENSATION DATELINE: Dec 29, 2010 LENGTH: 00:00:53 VO Villagers in southwest China's Yunnan Province have received record compensation for their loss by wild elephant attacks this year. About 960 thousand yuan, or about 140 thousand U.S. dollars, were given on Tuesday to 131 households in Kelian village near a national reserve in the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. The compensation is the highest since the special insurance came into being in 2009. The rainforest in the reserve is home to more than 250 wild elephants. The local forestry office says the elephants have attacked more than 140 people and destroyed 50 thousand tons of grain over the last two decades. Villagers can get 450 to 1,500 thousand dollars of compensation per year for loss caused by the animals. Powered by www.newslook.com Producer : Xinhua News Agency
