STORY: CHINA LEAD POISONING DATELINE: Jan. 7, 2010 LENGTH:0:00:56 LOCATION: Gaohe, Anhui VOSOT More than 200 children in east China have been tested to have dangerously high levels of lead in their blood. Investigators have blamed an illegal battery factory for it. It's the latest in a string of battery-related poisonings in the country in recent years. The government of Anhui Province's Huaining County said on Thursday that 28 children have been hospitalized with lead poisoning. They age between nine months and 16 years. An unlicensed battery plant close to the town is to blame for the poisoning. And authorities have shut it down. The children have been diagnosed with high blood lead levels following a government-sponsored checkup. SOUNDBITE (CHINESE) HUANG JINHUA, PARENT: "There's a battery plant near our home. It's only within 100 meters." According to environmental protection authorities, no residential community should be built within a radius of 500 meters from a bat Powered by www.newslook.com Producer : Xinhua News Agency
