STORY: UN WELCOMES SUDAN VOTE

The United Nations has called on all parties concerned to respect the outcome of a recent referendum in South Sudan.
The polling centers have closed after staying open for a week and the ballot counting process is now in progress.
The UN Security Council welcomed the referendum held in South Sudan. It said the vote was up to the international electoral standards.
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) HAILE MENKERIOS, SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR SUDAN:
"Sudan is on the eve of a new dawn and it is going to need a heavy dose of encouragement and support from the international community to make sure committed implementation of the CPA signifies a final and definitive break with the past and opens a new era of prosperity and stability for all Sudanese."
