British sculptor Anish Kapoor has just cancelled a planned exhibition in China. Kapoor's spokesman told The Art Newspaper on Tuesday it's because of the detention of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.

Ai Weiwei was arrested in Bejing on April 3rd in the latest wave of the Chinese regime's crackdown on dissidents.

His family members say his current whereabouts are unknown, while Chinese authorities state he is being investigated for (quote) "economic crimes."

Kapoor has denounced Ai Weiwei's detention as (quote) "barbaric," which already cast doubt over whether his exhibition would go on. Originally, Kapoor was asked by the British Council to plan a show at Beijing's National Museum of China in Tiananmen Square. It was to be part of next year's "UK Now" festival.
