And following on the heels of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il's recent visit to China, a top Chinese Communist Party official has now visited Pyongyang.
China's state-controlled media is calling the visit by Li Yuanchao, head of the CCP's organization department, part of an effort to strengthen bilateral ties.
The close-together visits are uncommon, but may reflect growing economic coordination between the two regimes. It's generally accepted that China's rulers fear a North Korean collapse could further destabilize their own authority.
