Chile's erupting volcano covers a nearby town in ash. Residents are concerned about their own health and their livestock. Here's more.
The massive volcanic ash cloud which is grounding flights from Argentina to Australia is now dumping ash on a Chilean town, causing concern among residents for their own safety and the health of their livestock.
The town of Rininahue is overshadowed by a thick cloud of ash that has spewed from a volcano in Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle chain since last Saturday.
Until Monday, populated areas in Chile have mostly been spared as strong Andean winds carried the thick ash over the mountains into neighboring Argentina.
Health experts say the ash will not pose serious health risks.
But for the animals feeding on ash-covered grasses, it's a different story.
[Sonia Carrillo, Rininahue Resident]:
"...I am scared for us and for our animals. I hope it isn't too much because I can't get them out of here to move them down below anyhow."
