A white fawn has been born to a spotted deer in the eastern province of Shandong. Experts say it's a very unusual occurrence. Chinese people consider its birth an auspicious sign.

A white fawn was born to a spotted deer in Shandong province, eastern China. Apart from a big patch on its head, and a brown strip half down its back the fawn is pure white. Experts say it's a rare occurrence. The fawn was born recently at the Bolin Deer Farm in Laiyang City. Unlike other newborns, it galloped around the farm just four hours after its birth.

[Yang Qi, Farm Manager]:
"This deer is much more vigorous and smarter than the other spotted deer."

The fawn was born normal size and build—weighing more than 13 pounds. It's 24 inches long and 20 inches tall.

The white deer, also called the 'snow deer,' are a precious breed of spotted deer.

[Yang Qi, Farm Manager]:
"The parents of this white deer are both pure-spotted deer. I have never seen such a deer before despite the fact that I have been breeding deer for more than ten years."

According to experts, it's not easy for spotted deer to give birth to pure-white deer, because genetic mutation of color is rare. Chinese people consider the birth of a white deer an auspicious sign.
