Flooding in a Chinese coal mine has trapped 12 miners in southwest Guizhou Province, according to state media reports. It's the latest accident in the country's notoriously dangerous mining industry.

It happened at about 9am local time on Sunday when around 50 miners were working in the shaft of the Fu Hong coal mine... 38 other miners managed to escape.

According to state media CCTV, knocking sounds in pipes were heard from underground on Sunday afternoon suggesting signs of life... but then disappeared when the pumping began.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

China's mines are the deadliest in the world, due to lax safety standards and a rush to feed the country's developing economy.
