16 children have died after a landslide struck an orphange in Malaysia on Saturday. Rescue teams worked through the night and managed to save nine kids.
On Saturday, a landslide struck at an orphanage near Malaysia's capital city of Kuala Lumpur.
44 children, between seven and 18-years-old, were taking part in a motivational camp when the tragedy struck. 16 children have died.
Using their bare hands and mechanical shovels, search teams rescued nine children from under the layers of muddy earth that partially covered the orphanage.
Rescue operations continued throughout the night despite heavy rainfall, until 5 am Sunday.
Early Sunday, a solemn traditional Muslim funeral was held in the capital.
The disaster has drawn attention to the rapid urbanization in the areas surrounding Kuala Lumpur. Officials hand out permits to construct buildings on hilly slopes despite concerns over the stability of the soil they are built on.
