Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan says Japan needs to review its nuclear policies. He aims for the country to become a leader in new energy sources after the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

Japanese prime minister Naoto Kan says his country needs to rethink how nuclear power is regulated. But he sidestepped the question of how big a role atomic energy would play in the country's future.

Japan is trying to contain a crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11 knocked out the plant's cooling systems, leading to radiation leaks.

    [Naoto Kan, Japanese Prime Minister]:
"Given this accident, we need to ensure safety of the nuclear energy, and we need to review what can be done in order to do so."

Kan says recyclable energy and energy conservation need to be added as new policy pillars, in addition to petroleum fuel and nuclear power.

    [Naoto Kan, Japanese Prime Minister]:
"I want our country to become the leader of new energy sources."

Kan also said he would allow nuclear plants that are currently shut down for inspection to restart once they meet emergency safety standards.
