(0518 CR M01) CHINA-EU TIES DATELINE: May 18, 2011 LENGTH: 00:01:33 PKG INTRO Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with visiting European Council President Herman Van Rompuy in Beijing on Tuesday. The two sides pledged to further boost bilateral ties. The visit comes as the EU replaces Japan as China's top source of imports. PKG Van Rompuy, who is on his first official visit outside the EU bloc since taking office, labeled China as quote "a main trading partner" and "a partner in global governance." He said China and the European Union should work together as key players to adapt to the changing and globalized world. According to China's Ministry of Commerce, the EU has replaced Japan as China's No.1 import source in the first four months this year. China-EU trade topped 480 billion U.S. dollars last year. Van Rompuy asked the two sides to layout a long-term plan for cooperation and exchange, and properly settle disputes.
