According to an announcement, Japan has suspended the expedition to quote, "ensure safety", after an animal rights vessel from the U.S.-based Sea Shepherd Conservation Society chased it on its latest mission. The Japanese Fisheries Agency said the expedition fleet will resume hunting when it is considered safe, without specifying a date. Japan's annual Antarctic whaling expedition is facing mounting hostilities from environmentalists, which last year included a collision between a Japanese whaling ship and a New Zealand vessel. The expedition fleet has this year failed to catch even half of the nearly 1,000 whales it plans to hunt.
