Seven coaches of an express train derailed in central India. 20 passengers have been injured, and are being treated at a local hospital.

Seven coaches of a Pratapgarh-bound express train derailed in India's Madhya Pradesh state. 20 passengers were injured and rail traffic was disrupted as a result.

The train derailed between Sourai and Sumer stations.

[Anil Kumar Saxena, Addl. Director General, Indian Railways]:
"Among the derailed coaches are included one guard coach, one ordinary second class and four sleeper class coaches."

While three bogies of the train overturned, four others jumped off the track, disrupting rail traffic in both directions between Bhopal and New Delhi.

Senior officials rushed to the scene and a medical team was also sent to treat the injured passengers.

[Anil Kumar Saxena, Addl. Director General, Indian Railways]:
"Now the situation at the accident site is all the stranded passengers have been evacuated from the accident site. The front portion of the train has been taken to Bina (a city in Madhya Pradesh). The passengers of the rear portion, which was badly affected in the accident, they have also been taken in a special train to Vidisha. There was a pantry car in the train which helped in providing basic breakfast and water to the passengers."

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident.
