Mistakes to Avoid When Designing Your Home - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats.

Hi, I'm Mary Bokovoy, owner of Hood River reDesign and one of the most common mistakes that I see most of my clients make is that in their homes, when you walk into your room, it lacks a focal point. And that is the biggest difference you will see from your home to a magazine. When you are flipping through and you are like "I want that, I want that incredible look", and the biggest difference is just making sure that you make the most out of the focal point.

And what is a focal point? Typically it's going to be a fireplace, a view, a piano, a media wall, where your TV is at, or even a photo gallery. Its the one thing in the room where you are going to direct people to say "Look at me!", you know. And everything else in the room should be quieter and really play a supporting role. So if it's the fireplace for example, you would want to do your furniture in a U-shaped, you know, layout, supporting with the open end of the U, pointed at the fireplace. So it is very obvious, this is what is the emphasis in the room. And if you do that, you are on the right track to making your room look more designed.
