STORY: UK COALITION REFERENDUM DATELINE: May 5, 2011 LENGTH: 0:02:15 LOCATION: Tokyo INTRO Britons have voted in a referendum on changing the way legislators are elected. It's the country's first national referendum in 36 years. But latest opinion polls indicate a "No" is the likely outcome. PKG The referendum on Thursday asked Britons to decide whether to replace the current first-past-the-post voting system for the House of Commons. Britain currently operates a first-past-the-post system for 650 constituencies around the country. In this voting system, the winner is the person with the most votes, no matter whether the vote gets more than 50 percent or not. The alternative preference system allows voters to choose a second candidate after their first choice. If no single candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote, the second choices for the candidate at the bottom are redistributed. The process is repeated until one candidate gets an absolute majority. Although t Powered by www.newslook.com Producer : Xinhua News Agency
