The micro-chip giant Intel has announced that it will mass-manufacture chips using new transistors featuring a three-dimensional structure.
The 3-D transistor represents a fundamental departure from the two-dimensional transistor structure that has powered computers, mobile phones and other electronics.
According to Intel, the 3-D transistors enable chips to perform 37 per cent more efficiently than the current ones.
