Trainer Aircraft Crashes in Southern India

A trainer aircraft crashed during a routine test flight in southern India. Two pilots flying the aircraft were brought to safety.

An advanced jet trainer aircraft crashed during a routine test flight in the Krishnagiri district of India's Tamil Nadu state on Thursday.

The two pilots ejected to safety.

Soon a team of technicians rushed to the scene for rescue, repair and salvage operations.

[C. Maheswari, Superintendent of Police, Krishnagiri]:
"They had taken off for the test flying purpose. Only two pilots traveled in the flight. So, they got some malfunction in the flight and immediately they jumped with the help of parachutes and both of then are safe now. The Indian Air Force personnel immediately came in helicopter and they rescued both of them and admitted them to a Bangalore hospital."

The aircraft was designed and built by the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited of Bangalore.

The Intermediate Jet Trainer aircraft was destroyed by fire.
