The astronaut's pioneering mission remains the crowning accomplishment of the country's space program and a major source of national pride. PKG Russia pulled out all the stops on Tuesday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Gagarin's historic space mission on April 12, 1961. Space officials and astronauts from around the world arrived in Moscow to pay tributes to the rocketeer, whose 108-minute flight spurred America to race for the moon. The U.S. government congratulated Russia on the anniversary, but noted tongue-in-cheek that America got to the Moon first.
