(0411 CR M07)MORE RECYCLING IN CHINA
DATELINE: April 11, 2011
China has made progress in recycling waste, as 70 percent of renewable resources in more than 50 Chinese cities are now being collected for recycling.
China Report has the story.
Statistics from the Ministry of Commerce show that 70 percent of renewable resources in 55 cities in China are now being collected for recycling.
The number was up 30 percent from the 2006 figure.
Vice-minister of commerce, Jiang Zengwei explains that the increase is due to a national pilot program aimed at promoting a circular economy.
Under the project, about 267 million U.S. dollars have been invested in the establishment of 33,000 community waste recovery sites, 181 sorting centers and 36 large regional terminal markets for the recovery of renewable resources.
About 140 million tons of renewable resources was processed in 2009 in China. It was translated into 76 billion U.S. dollars in value.
