In India's Jammu and Kashmir state, restoration work has begun on the famous Nishat garden, which dates back to the 17th Century. It's an effort to attract more tourists to the region after years of violence in the Kashmir Valley.

Authorities in Indian Kashmir have begun restoration work of water channels and laying concrete pathways in the historical Nishat garden.

A floriculture officer of Srinagar district says the government helped get the project going.

[Javed Ahmad, Floriculture Officer]:
"The restoration work at the garden will be completed by this year and will become very beautiful. We received a lot of feedback from visitors and tourists that we should restore it. We also took this issue up with the Jammu and Kashmir government. And the government was kind enough to say that we should restore it to its prestige and glory."

The garden is the second largest after Shalimar Bagh near the famous Dal Lake.

Locals say the initiative taken by the provincial government will definitely help boost tourism.

[Mushtaq Ahmad, Local]:
"Because of the violence in the Kashmir Valley for the last 20-25 years, there were problems protecting this place. But now the government is taking care of it and our director of floriculture has taken a good step. And he has taken measures to restore many gardens like these."

Locals also say violence in the region delayed the repair work to the garden. Now many tourists appreciate the changes.

[Jessica, American Tourist]:
"The ones that are restored, you know, you look at them and you can see the concrete is nice. And you can get a sense of what it looked like back in the days when the Mughal emperors came here and when it would have been when they would have been wandering around."
