According to the initial results announced by the electoral council on Monday, Martelly won the elections with 68 percent of the votes. His rival, former first lady Miralnde Manigat, garnered 32 percent of the ballots. Manigat had won the first round of votes in December while Martelly was originally withdrawn from the second round. But he was reinstated a month later after international monitors found massive fraud in favor of the ruling party candidate. Martelly, aged 50, has no previous government experience. But he had preached a forceful message of change, pledging to break with decades of past corruption and misrule in the Caribbean country. The final results are expected on April 16.
