Nearly half of China's dairy firms have been ordered to halt production after several toxic food scandals.
In 2008, a toxic milk scandal killed at least six children and left hundreds of thousands ill. Producers laced their milk with poisonous melamine to boost the appearance of its protein content.
Earlier this year there was a public outcry because manufacturers added leather protein powder to dairy products, in another attempt to cheat protein content checks.
Now, the Chinese regime's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine says that out of about 1200 dairy production companies, 426 failed to pass inspections, and 107 have been ordered to halt production.
Meanwhile, local media reported the licensing crackdown would be used to eliminate smaller companies and consolidate the industry into fewer, larger companies.
