A United Nations rights group has called on the Chinese regime to release a prominent human rights lawyer who's been missing for almost a year. The group says the Chinese regime is punishing him for his work.
A United Nations rights body says the Chinese communist regime is violating international law by detaining renowned human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng. In a statement made public on Monday, the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention demanded Gao be released immediately.
As a lawyer, Gao had defended disadvantaged individuals—including adherents of Falun Gong, a persecuted spiritual practice. Gao has been detained since April last year. After previous detentions, he had given accounts of being severely tortured by prison guards.
The U.N. working group says the Chinese regime is punishing Gao for exercising his fundamental human rights. They accuse the regime of failing to meet, quote, "even the minimum international standards for due process."
But outside China, Gao's human rights efforts have been widely recognized. Last week, he was awarded the Bindmans Law and Campaigning Prize. His wife—who escaped China two years ago—accepted the award on his behalf.
