Officials warn if the dike is not fixed in time, the following flood season may even cause the dike to collapse. The repair work started on Monday in Yingjiang County, in southwest China's Yunnan Province, which was hit by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake 12 days ago. Local water resources official says more than 38 kilometers of the 53-kilometer dike were left seriously damaged. The earthquake left more than 160 cracks in the banks of the Dayingjiang River, close to which live 200,000 people. The repair work needs to be finished by May 20 before the flood season arrives. The quake struck the county on March 10, left 26 people dead and 313 injured, 133 seriously. It toppled 1,039 homes and seriously damaged 4,994 others.
