If you're planning a trip to Tibet this month you're out of luck.

The Chinese communist regime has ordered the region closed to foreign visitors and tour groups—at least temporarily.

It comes with the approach of the third anniversary of large-scale protests that rocked the region in March 2008. Those protests had led to the deaths of more than a hundred Tibetans—and to a harsh and prolonged CCP crackdown.

In general, only tour groups arranged through approved Chinese travel agents are allowed to visit Tibet. But on Monday, these agents reportedly received verbal orders to halt all tour arrangements there.

One Chinese travel agent told the Associated Press that Chinese officials told her the reason for closing off the region was safety concerns over the cold winter weather and possible overcrowding. Officials have not explicitly linked the closure of the region to the anniversary's political sensitivity.
