Former German defense minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg was regarded as the great hope of Germany's conservative parties and viewed by many as a prototype for a new politician. He stood for honesty, credibility and fairness. Now he has been tripped up by those same standards and resigned over plagiarism allegations involving his doctoral thesis. Chancellor Angela Merkel said she had accepted his resignation with a heavy heart.
