Following the resignation of Japan's foreign minister on Sunday, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano is temporarily taking up the post.
[Yukio Edano, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary]:
"As for the issue of what will happens until a successor is decided, I was asked by the Prime Minister to work as the acting foreign minister. From that point onward, I have been working also as the acting foreign minister."
Former Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara resigned on Sunday after he admitted taking donations from a Korean resident.
It was a blow to Prime Minister Naoto Kan, as he fights to keep his party from splintering and to enact budget bills in a divided parliament.
[Naoto Kan, Japanese Prime Minister]:
"I expressed my thoughts that quitting over these actions was not necessary and strongly requested that he remain. However in the end he himself decided that even though there was not a problem legally, that he would like to take responsibility politically for his actions."
The premier is also facing calls from within his own party to resign, while opposition parties are pushing him to call a snap election for the lower house.
