On Saturday, hundreds of fishermen protested against the construction of a thermal power plant in India's Andhra Pradesh state.

The protesters attacked police with sticks.

[K. V. V. Gopala Rao, Superintendent of Police, Srikakulam District]:
"They did not listen to the police and present their case in a democratic manner. They started attacking us. So we had to defend ourselves."

Around 30 protesters were injured in the clashes after police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the crowd.

Tension has been running high in the past two weeks in the area, with protesters blocking the movement of vehicles to the plant site and the police stepping up security.
