Royal fans flocked to cheer and applaud Prince William and Kate Middleton as they made their first official public appearance since announcing their engagement.

The Prince and his bride-to-be smiled and waved to a jubilant crowd of hundreds gathered at Trearddur Bay in Anglesey, North Wales, where the couple attended a service of dedication for a new RNLI lifeboat.

William, 28, and his fiancee emerged from their Range Rover to a chorus of cheers and stayed side by side as they met dignitaries and RNLI chiefs.

Miss Middleton, 29, in a tweed jacket, suede boots and leather gloves, laughed and chatted as they were led up to the podium.

As the couple took their place on the podium they exchanged glances and smiled at each other before singing both the English and Welsh national anthems.

William and Miss Middleton appeared together in December at a Norfolk fundraising concert for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

But Thursday's crowd-puller was their first official engagement, with Miss Middleton invited as a guest of honour, a Palace spokesman said, adding that they wanted their joint debut appearance to be in Anglesey.

The couple got engaged last October while on holiday in Kenya and they will marry at Westminster Abbey on April 29.
