About half of the residents of South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island are back home... months after a shelling attack from North Korea. People say they're happy to be back... having lived in shelters on the South Korea mainland.

Residents of South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island returned on Sunday after a North Korean shelling forced them to evacuate last November.

Nearly 800 of the island's 1700 residents returned, grateful to be home after staying at the port city of Incheon on the mainland of South Korea.

[Pak Jae-bok, Yeonpyeong Island Resident]:
"I stayed away from the island for three months. I could not adapt to living away from the island. I am glad I am returning to my island where I have a job to do."

A graduation ceremony took place at the Yeonpyeong Elementary, Middle and High School for 29 students.

[Oh Jeong-sook, Yeonpyeong Island Resident]:
"I am grateful for the fact that none of our students were injured and they could graduate from their school here."

Many buildings and houses were destroyed during the North's shelling, and temporary shelters have been set up on the island.

North Korea shelled Yeonpyeong in November 2010, killing four people and sparking fears of possible all-out war.
