And authorities in northern Australia evacuated about 300 people to makeshift shelters due to rising flood levels on Sunday.

The Daly River peaked early in the day and flooded homes in the small town of Nauiyu, south of Darwin.

Locals say several animals were snatched by crocodiles swimming in floodwaters.

[Resident Evacuee]:
"Once the water was rushing in, we were all terrified for the kids by crocs."

Authorities say they do not expect flood levels to recede for at least four days.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that Cyclone Carlos, the cause of heavy rain in the region, has intensified into a Category One cyclone.
