An avalanche claims three lives in the Anantnag region of Indian Kashmir. Local authorities are now in the middle of rescue and salvage operations to search for the missing.
An avalanche has hit the Anantnag region of India's Jammu and Kashmir state Wednesday night.
Three members of a family lost their lives as they were searching for their livestock in the open.
Extensive areas in the region are covered in deep snow, some areas as much as 10 feet.
Local authorities have deployed teams, including trained personnel from the Indian Army, for the rescue and salvage operations.
[Captain Gulam Ahmad Bhat, Army Officer]:
"We cannot estimate now when this will be over because the avalanche was approximately two kilometers long and 10 to 20 feet in depth. So we need a lot of time to remove it."
Rescue teams and locals are also searching for survivors in the snow.
