The Hobbit cast has been unveiled in New Zealand just weeks before production is due to begin on the long-awaited films.
Shooting will start in March, with the first of the two movies scheduled to be released in December 2012.
The Office star Martin Freeman will play Bilbo Baggins, stepping into the shoes of Ian Holm who played the role in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The actor said he is up for the challenge: "I genuinely, without being one way or the other either big headed or falsely modest, I think I am quiet a good match for him, you know, I have seen worse matches and I think I could do a young Ian Holm."
Director Sir Peter Jackson, who recently suffered a perforated ulcer, stayed away from the press conference but is said to be recovering after being released from hospital.
