There were numerous mass-murders during the intercommunal violence on Cyprus that lasted until the partition of the island. But only now are the crimes being investigated. In the summer of 1974 right-wing radical Greeks stormed the village of Tohni on the south coast of Cyprus. At the time it was home to both Greek and Turkish residents, but the latter were abducted and murdered. And it was not the only incident of its kind. Such mass murders occurred regularly on both sides. Following the identification of some of the victims, the relatives have brought their cases before the European Court of Human Rights. Now both sides of the island have come under pressure to conduct investigations.
