Security has been increased along the border areas in Inida's Kashmir state ahead of the country's Republic Day. Police were seen checking people and vehicles coming into the region.
Police, army and border security have increased their presence in many border areas in India’s Jammu and Kashmir state ahead of Republic Day.
The state suffers regular infiltration attempts by militants, and gun battles between insurgents and security forces are commonplace.
As of Monday, hundreds of policemen were seen across Jammu City carrying out checks on all vehicles coming into the region.
[Basant Kumar Rath, Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu District]:
"We are checking all the vehicles that are coming in from those areas and the population movement. At night, the vehicles are thoroughly checked and we will try not to dilute the security cover for January 26th and to prevent any militancy related activities.”
Police have increased the number of security personnel at the state's famous Maulana Azad stadium.
Police were seen checking locals in the traffic, and students and motorcyclists had to show some identification to police.
At least four infiltration attempts were prevented during the last 10 days.
