Association of South East Asia Nations meeting concludes in Indonesia... with members calling for a greater role for the organization in providing stability to the region. They also aimed to improve economic growth through a sense a regional community.

A meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations (or ASEAN) ended on Monday in Indonesia, with calls for the organization to provide stability in the region.

The group held talks in between tropical downpours at an exclusive beach resort on Lombok Island.

Talks aimed to further economic growth by lowering border tariffs, improving transport links and fostering a sense of regional community.

[Marty Natelgawa, Indonesian Foreign Minister]:
"We are not in a negative state but the work ahead of us is quite daunting, I think we only have another four years only before the community supposed to be in realization."

ASEAN is aiming to build an economic community by 2015 that would encompass around 500 million people and some of the world's fastest growing economies.

In terms of regional security, Indonesia's Foreign Minister, Marty Natalegawa said the group could play a bigger role in defusing tensions in the region.

[Marty Natelgawa, Indonesian Foreign Minister]:
"We don't wish to see these fault lines extrapolated, projected to the entire region and therefore ASEAN must come up with the vision, with the ideas how to ensure the East Asia region to an area of stability, area of peace."

The ministers sought to find common ground on maritime disputes with China, and hoped to play a role in facilitating the resumption of multilateral talks on North Korea.
