Japan's state minister Koichiro Gemba met South Korean Foreign Minister, Kim Sung-hwan, on Friday to discuss a free trade deal.
Gemba was expected to outline Japan's position on a free trade deal with Seoul and seek South Korea's views on the deal.
Seoul's Yonhap News Agency said Japan and South Korea held preparatory talks for future negotiations on a deal, but the discussion made little progress. This was due to South Korea's large trade deficit with Japan and disagreement over how much Japan should open up its agricultural sector.
