Hansen says Hodgson deserved more time

7 years ago294 views

Roy Hodgson should have had more time to turn things around at struggling Liverpool, according to former captain Alan Hansen.

Speaking about Hodgson's departure Hansen said: "I would have said give him until the end of the season, give him some money. I don't think six months is a period you can turn things around."

"I think he inherited a poor squad of players by Liverpool standards, but modern-day football you don't have any time, it's all results based and there's no compassion shown whatsoever."

However, player turned pundit Hansen has said that Hodgson's temporary replacement, club legend Kenny Dalglish, will bring the feelgood factor back to Anfield.

He said: "Kenny is a great choice. Obviously I'm biased because we've been friends for a long time. I've played under Kenny at Liverpool and he's Liverpool through and through and if you need a caretaker manager, someone to galvanise the crowd and get the players going, Kenny's an ideal choice to take them to the end of the season."

Hansen added that he was not surprised that Liverpool's American owners had turned to the Scot, despite the former striker having been out of management since June 2000.

On the possibility of Dalglish staying on beyond the end of the season at Anfield, Hansen said: "If Kenny turns things around and did really well then they will have a situation, because Kenny will want the job and quite rightly so."

Another former Liverpool player, John Barnes has also expressed his belief that King Kenny could stick with Liverpool, saying: "It is his job to lose and if he does a good job it is very likely he will get a new contract."
